Taunton Leisure Sponsor UK’s first DWS Climbing Competition

We’re totally buzzing to be part of the UK’s first Deep Water Solo (DWS) Climbing Competition organised by The Quay Climbing Centre Exeter on August 30 & 31.

It’s a two day climbing competition on an artificial wall pitched over the Exeter canal basin with no ropes. There will be an invitation-based elite category featuring some of the world’s top climbers and open categories to adults and under 16s. Top UK climbers will be there, including Neil Gresham, Emma Twyford, Wiz Fineron and Liam Halsey.

Event organisers & Taunton Leisured sponsored wall, The Quay Climbing Centre:  “The competition wall will be erected in the city’s canal basin.  Climbers will attempt to navigate routes upwards and across the feature without the aid of ropes, using the water beneath them as their drop point when they can no longer climb.”

What is deep water soloing (DWS)?

Also known as “Psycho Bouldering”, DWS is one of the fastest growing areas of solo climbing, relying upon the presence of water at the base of climbs to protect against injury from any falls that may occur. The routes are of high difficulty, meaning that any fall will result in something quite visually spectacular, as well as a very wet climber!

DWS is said to originate in the South West as well as Majorca and is viewed as a relatively new climbing discipline, although it has been practiced since the 70’s.

This DWS climbing competition is the first of its kind of take place in the UK and we’re delighted to be a part of it.
