New for winter 2015, Haglofs have released a range of insulated jackets for men and women in hooded and hood-less varieties, known as Essens Mimic.
Because, despite appearances, it isn’t a down filled jacket. It mimics the properties of down while also offering the benefits of a synthetic fill.
- Low weight
- High loft
- Compressible & ‘packable’
- Water resistant
- Retains insulating properties when wet
Despite those thin micro-baffles and a good-looking appearance that resembles other down-insulated jackets on the market, the range of Mimic products from Haglofs use a synthetic insulation known as QuadFusion.
QuadFusion is as warm per gram as a 700 fill down insulation. QuadFusion even forms up in those small clusters much the same that natural down doe. It’s made from 100% Bluesign-approved, recycled polyester fibres.
In other words, it looks the same as down, feels very similar to down and it provides a comparable feeling of warmth for the amount of insulation used.
So what’s the benefit? What’s different?
QuadFusion delivers ‘easy care’ characteristics and water resistance – features typical of synthetic insulation – to back up the warm down mimicking qualities of warmth and loft.
It’s easier to live with and not vulnerable to wet weather, maintaining a larger degree of its insulating properties than down does. When down gets wet it is danger of becoming ineffective. With a synthetic insulation like QuadFusion or TNF’s ThermoBall you get the best of both worlds.
Pertex Outer Fabric
The outer shell fabric is a lightweight 30D tear and wind resistant Pertex Microlight shell fabric with a DWR coating. It’s also bluesign approved like the insulation. Pertex is one of the premiere manufacturers of fabric for use in a variety of garments from a number of top outdoor brands.
Pertex lightweight, as the name suggests, provides lightweight weather protection with an abrasion resistant fabric. This enables the Essens jacket to weigh in at around 186g (size L) – the fabric is also very soft to the touch!
Our Haglofs Essens Mimic range:
A combination of the warmth and insulation of down with the enhanced durability and versatility of a synthetic fill, much like you get on the hugely popular ThermoBall range from The North Face.
Haglofs Sustainable Choice:
Haglofs are leading the outdoor industry in their commitment to operate more sustainable processes, materials and an overall way of doing business.
“Our overally sustainability policy is simple: we minimize our negative environmental impact by developing long-lasting products, by using socially responsible manufacturers and by continuously increasing the proportion of recycled and bluesign approved materials in our products.
“In 2013, 57% of our sold clothing were bluesign products. We are aiming for 80% in 2015.”
