Outwell Tents 2013 – Buying Guide (Part 1)

Want an up to date guide? Read what’s new in Outwell tents for 2016!

Almost as soon as the winter is over (and it has been somewhat extended this year!) we’re already looking ahead toward the camping season. Just the other day we had our first delivery of brand new Outwell tents.

We’ve been working with Outwell for several years now and what we’ve come to learn about them is that their tents are top of the tree when it comes to quality, comfort and innovation.

With a dynamic range, including the brand new inflatable Outwell Smart Air  Collection, we’re delighted to offer you a guide into what to look for and what’s new in this year’s range of 2013 Outwell tents.

Outwell Tents Smart Air Collection

Brand new for 2013 is the inflatable, quick to pitch Smart Air Collection. Smart Air promises to provide all the quality and features that you’d expect from Outwell tents in a super quick pitching time, thanks to it’s ‘One-go Inflation Technology‘.

Smart Air tents inflate using a single air inlet valve. Rather than having to pump up each tube individually, all tubes are linked together with other valves. This means in the unlikely event of a deflation, individual tubes are isolated to prevent total deflation and facilitate a quick repair.

Outwell Tents Concorde M & L

Outwell Concorde M & L

Our range of Smart Air tents is made up of the Outwell Concorde M & Outwell Concorde L.

The Concorde range are tunnel tents that use top spec materials; hard wearing oxford polyester floor and an Outtex Airtech polycotton flysheet – cool in warm conditions and warmer in the cold.

The ‘poles’ perform optimally between 8.7 – 11.6 psi.

We got to view the Concorde at a trade show at the end of last season and we were impressed with the rigidity of the structure.

In terms of design it’s pretty similar in appearance to the Nevada LP from the new Evolution Collection – a tunnel design with plenty of features including:

  • Adjustable pegging points
  • heavy duty Outwell zips
  • large tinted windows with polycotton curtains
  • floating guylines
  • Outwell Easy Pegging System
  • rain safe entrance
  • many more!

Inside, you can see plenty of space to put your belongings (tables, chairs, storage etc) and nice large tinted windows with mesh to provide extra ventilation. Bedroom compartments are spacious with an adjustable zipped division.

As with all Outwell tents, appendages such as guylines and inners are pre attached, making pitching as simple as possible.

Outwell Outtex Airtech Polycotton

All Outwell tents in the Classic and Smart Air ranges use the top quality Outtex Airtech polycotton flysheet material.

This material is designed to make the tent more comfortable to live in as well as provide durable performance in all weather conditions.

The polycotton material is different from the thinner polyester material that many associate with tents. How so?

  • It’s thicker
  • Stronger
  • More durable
  • Breathable
  • Heavier
  • It’s also highly resistant to UV decay
  • Polycotton tents have a significantly longer lifespan than their polyester or nylon counterparts.

For those veteran campers among you, it has the look and feel of traditional 100% cotton that you will have seen in old-style ‘bell tents’ and the like, but it is actually a mixture of 65% cotton and 35% polyester (hence the name ‘polycotton’) – this allows for a reduction in weight and quicker drying properties.

Polycotton is not only stronger, but it is more breathable than polyester. The material has thousands of tiny ‘pores’ that allow for air to permeate the material allowing for a cooler living environment.

The outer is sprayed with a DWR (durable water repellent) solution which protects against the rain, as does the natural properties of the fabric. When the fabric gets wet, the fibers ‘swell’ and block the pores, preventing any water ingress into the tent. It’s a simple system that works effectively.

They aren’t given hydrostatic head (HH) ratings as the way the fabric repels and protects against water ingress is different, but they are comparable with, even surpassing, the highest HH ratings available on polyester flysheet tents.

Outwell Classic Collection

The Classic Collection has been a staple of our range now at Taunton Leisure for several years. Featuring several best selling Outwell tents:

The classic collection represents, in our opinion, some of the highest quality of family tents on the market today. All tents in this collection are made using the durable, breathable Outtex Airtech polycotton flysheet fabric. They also utilise an alloy frame; colour coded poles deliver class-leading strength at a remarkably light weight – Classic Collection tents are able to withstand winds up to force 10 on the Beaufort Scale.

For the groundsheet, Outwell’s Sealed Ground System is an easy to use PVC tarpaulin material that zips into the flysheet preventing any bugs, water, or draughts getting into the tent. It makes the tent easier to maintain, pack away and transport as the weight and bulk are divided away from the flysheet. They are incredibly durable and can cope with the wear and tear of people walking in and out of them many times over.

2013 Outwell Tents Trout Lake

2013 Trout Lake

What’s new?

There are several new additions to Outwell tents in this range that have pushed the bar even higher for quality and features.

The tents look different to those of last season in probably the most significant change to the range in several years.

  • Newly added panorama front allows for great all-round views of your environment.
  • All new ‘Oil Green‘ colourway.
  • Flat pole sleeves providing enhanced stability
  • Floating guylines‘ for a ‘cleaner’ aesthetic
  • Drying rail (Bear & Wolf Lake only)
  • Heavy duty storm straps.
  • Newly available awning conversion kit (Bear & Wolf Lake only)
  • New removable wardrobe compartment.
  • New wave shaped Hanging Point System for the inners.
  • Front Extension now zips on (Trout Lake)
  • Bear Lake 6 over 1m longer than 2012 model, Wolf Lake 7 1.5m longer.

Awning Conversion Kit

This year the Wolf Lake has been radically redesigned to incorporate a new open front that acts like an extension. The tent is over a metre and a half longer than last years model! This creates a huge area, ideal for sitting and relaxing under cover.

The Bear Lake features a longer front canopy which offers plenty of shade when required, like it’s bigger brother, the tent is over a metre longer than last year’s version.

For those who want to add more space, Outwell have made this possible for the first time with the introduction of the awning conversion kit. This piece of kit transforms the extended front porch into a fully enclosed awning, providing plenty of extra indoor space to the tent.

The components of the Awning Conversion Kit exactly match lines, mud valance and colourways of their respective tents, they use the same Outtex Airtech fabric and PVC tarpaulin groundsheet material.

Outwell Sun Collection

Tents in our range: Outwell Hilo Reef, Outwell Kauai Reef

Add a bit of brightness to your life with the vibrantly coloured Sun Collection. Known this year as ‘Nugget’, tents in this range are a retro shade of orange that are certain to stand out.

2013 Outwell Hilo Reef

In our range we have the Outwell Hilo Reef and the Kauai Reef. These tents use the Outtex Airtech polycotton fabric for added comfort in hotter or colder weather.

The poles are two strong steel and two fibreglass, one of which is used to create a front canopy, ideal for sitting under on those sunny days and also functions as a rain safe front entrance. The floor is zip in Double-coated 100% polyethylene.

  • Pre attached floating guyline system
  • Organiser pockets
  • Reinforcement patching on all stress points
  • Front canopy
  • Large rain safe front vent
  • Heavy duty Outwell zips
  • and much more!

Taunton Leisure Sanders Outdoor Tent Display

New Demos at the Tent Show

Each year, from Easter until September, we showcase our range of Outwell tents near junction 22 M5 at Sanders Garden World, near Brent Knoll in Somerset. Our display includes over 35 family sized tents as well as specialist, technical tents and tipis as well.

Having a 5 month long display enables you to see the tents perform come rain, wind, or shine for an extended period of time.

This gives you a real appreciation of how tents actually perform on a day to day basis in real world conditions. Our tent show staff are with the tents every day for the whole of the summer and they get to know these tents like they’re family!

We have a large marquee full of accessories and keep the tents brand new and in stock. If you see something you can like you can take it away that day!

We hope to see you there!

Why would Outwell not include a front door screen mesh on the Harrier XL like they did on the Hornet XL? Having only one screen mesh side door on the Harrier seems very limiting for ventilation in warmer climates and makes no sense to not have it on their premium tent version.
