Product Review: Rab Vapour-Rise Guide Jacket

Marcos has recently joined the team at Taunton Leisure but has worked within the industry for a number of years. Marcos has a passion for walking and has recently started to develop his climbing.

In my opinion, it is the best jacket Rab has produced so far…

Once in a while, you come across a piece of equipment that you just do not get tired of.

For me, that piece is the Rab Vapour-Rise Guide. I seem to live in the thing and it’s the only jacket I have by my door at the ready. I have been wearing it for almost two years now and after a wash, it still looks and feels as good as the day I bought it.

It’s a winter weight softshell but you can also use it over a t-shirt on a crisp cold spring morning. This is due to the properties of the fabric. Rab uses a material developed exclusively by Rab® and Pertex®, Vapour-Rise™, that creates breathable, high wicking and quick drying performance. Allied to that it also uses a durable Pertex® Equilibrium outer fabric and light-weight Matrix® DWS stretch panels.

When you put these together the results are surprising. I call it my “Smug” jacket because that is how it makes me feel both on the hills or walking around town in the winter.

I’ll explain why, do you know when you are walking around and see someone wearing two t-shirts, a fleece, a winter jacket, scarf, beanie hat and still looking cold? When I am wearing the Guide jacket, in the same conditions, I’m just wearing a thin merino base layer underneath.
See? Smug…

On the inside of jacket, you will find a nice, warm Polartec high-loft fleece spread on a honeycomb pattern that helps spread the warm air a lot more evenly inside the jacket. On the outside, you find that the Pertex® Equilibrium keeps the wind at bay and gives you amazing water repellency for when a surprise shower hits you.

This jacket will cope very well with ten minutes of heavy rain, and when it eventually gets wet, it dries really fast as you walk around. But this is not all! It is incredibly breathable as well! If you pick up the jacket and put it against a light, you will see that it is almost see through.. hence the breathability. And if you do get a bit too warm, it comes equipped with pit zips to help release the bulk of the heat out. Magical…

And if all this wasn’t enough, it has five pockets in total. Five! Two hand-warmer pockets, one napoleon pocket that gobbles a non-laminated OS map and two internal pockets on each side for phone, navigation system or whatever you want to keep protected from the elements.

In summary, for all of these reasons and many others, the Rab Vapour-rise™ Guide Jacket is the most versatile, practical, comfortable, well-made jacket I have.

Dare I say it? I’m going to say it… In my opinion, it is the best jacket Rab has produced so far…
