Ten Tors on the Horizon…

We’re going to be on Dartmoor this May 11 & 12 to support and advise Ten Tors – the UK’s premier hiking event for young people which is being held for the 53rd time. We can’t wait!

The Ten Tors Challenge offers schools, colleges, cadets and scout groups the opportunity to test themselves against up to 55 miles of self-navigated walking across the wilderness; through any ten of the 26 ‘Tor’ checkpoints to register their progress.

How does it work? There are 26 different routes over three different distances – twelve ‘Bronze’ routes of 35 miles for ages 14 to 15 years, ten 45 mile ‘Silver’ routes for 16 to 17-year-olds, and four ‘Gold’ routes of 55 miles for 18 to 19 years, or 17-year-olds who completed a Silver route the previous year.

Participants form teams of six, all of whom set off at 0700h close to the Okehampton Camp at the sound of a cannon. Each team has a nominated leader, and carry all their own food, clothing, tents, stoves, fuel, navigation equipment, maps, emergency rations and a first aid kit.

Preparation for the challenge is essential – teams are known to train for a few months prior to the event.

The event is supported by the military, emergency services, Dartmoor Rescue Group and others including ourselves. We have attended for the last 10 years (roughly!) offering special discount on kit available to those who need last minute supplies.

Ten Tors is a test of endurance, navigation and survival skills, not just because of the terrain and distance, but also the weather. Each year has seen a growth in participation, with over 2,400 entrants expected for 2013.

We’ve been supporting Ten Tors participants for over 25 years and among our staff are several Ten Tors trainers, team leaders and experts, able to provide advice and help with the strict requirements of the kit list needed to be adhered to fully to pass scrutineering.

Staff at the Exeter shop were involved in implementing recent changes to the kit list to reflect the changes in clothing and equipment technology.

We always have a stand up at the event (look out for the giant Khyam Megadome!) to supply the little things that the scrutineers notice you have forgotten.

We do this as a service and concentrate our stock on the kit list rather than trying to sell more expensive kit to the leaders and parents! We also offer a 20% discount to all Ten Tors participants
